Thanks to Bill, Carl and Roger – A confession

Grrrrrrr.  I hate when I am so blatantly reminded of my transgressions. My confession is this. Not once during General Assembly did I thank or acknowledge Roger, Carl or Bill for answering their calls to stand for Moderator. My mother raised me better than that.  Not good, and I am profoundly sorry. While there were [...]

No day but today

Hard to believe that by the end of today, this "Candidate for Moderator" time of my life will be over.  The past six months have been a joy and a great time of learning about myself and the church.  What a gift it has been!  Thanks all for everything.  Next post, tonight after midnight sometime [...]

Dropping of the Grid, just for a day

Over the past few months some of the best conversations that I have had about the Moderatorial Candidacy journey have been with folks who have been through this process before.  Some have been elected, others not, but there are quite a few common words of wisdom that have been passed along. be yourself be prepared [...]

Let the countdown begin

Can it be?  Exactly one month until the beginning of General Assembly?  It is hard to believe, but it is true.  This journey began nearly six months ago when I let folks know that I would be nominated to stand for moderator.  The Presbytery of San Francisco endorsed me in January and even since I [...]

Thanks for your support

Whew . . . finally flew in last night from my trips to Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Louisville . . . and boy are may arms tired While my two etiquette-minded sisters would be aghast that I would not thank people via a traditional thank you card, this post will have to do for now.*  So [...]

and they said the internet was a fad ;-)

While there are certainly still some questions about that remain about the validity of a 2.0 Moderator, I think it is safe to say that the online buzz is increasing.  As of this weekend all four if us are now on Facebook.  After getting to know the other three candidates a little better this past [...]

East Coast swing

East Coast** here we come! After leaving a sick kid with my wife and now sitting here at SFO ready to hop on a red-eye to Louisville, that little voice inside whispers, "Why are you doing this again?"  Seriously.  Then I start thinking about the next few days and I get all giddy – yeah, [...]

Getting Pre-election General Assembly time with the moderator candidates

As a Youth Advisory Delegate advisor for many years, much of the orientation that we gave was to help translate some of the unspoken rules and rhythms of General Assembly.  As this moderator journey unwinds, here is another one of those unknown rhythms that might be helpful for folks to know more about: getting the [...]

The “Boys” are coming to Lawrenceville

UPDATED on March 10, 2008 with two new links: Updated invitationFacebook invitation Okay, so lets just acknowledge the very strange reality that the four candidates this year are all men.  I am sure this has happened before, but I don’t remember it at any of the GA’s that I have attended.  Details are still being [...]

Have time for coffee in KC?

This evening I leave for four days to hang out with a friend and colleague, Jeff Light, in Kansas City.  Jeff has arranged for a few chances to hang out with folks and really geek-out about the future of the church.  If you can’t make any of the scheduled hang-out times, please drop me a [...]

What is the purpose of the Moderator?

Updated: 02.19.08 @ 11:06am: post typo-cop input Updated: 02.21.08 @ 2:33pm: GA 101: Moderator – All things in Moderation from the GA Junkie. Scarily complete. On my post, Problems with a 2.0 Moderator, Dan Williams left the following comment, You are standing/campaigning not for the position of president, prime minister, or bishop of the General Assembly, [...]

Standing for one another

One of the things that is so very cool about this moderator thing – yes there are some things – is that there seems to be a real bond that develops not just between those who win, but between those who are candidates.  While I have not met either of the two other folks, Bill [...]
