Even the Leaves Shall Rest

one invitation to be reflective about rest

This week, I am in Lake Tahoe at my childhood camp and conference center, Zephyr Point Conference Center. This place has formed and continues to form me through the beauty of creation and the people who gather here. This time, I am here with a Presbyterian Clergy and Leaders of Color gathering. This morning, we were given a scripture passage and sent to sit with it. Well, of course, I got distracted by this spinning leaf, so I wrote some words about how fast we moving, the rhythms of living, and whether in peaks or valleys, we all need time to slow down and rest.

I invite you to watch and listen to all 30 seconds over and over again.1

It’s mesmerizing.

Even the Leaves Shall Rest

whether spun about
by a whispering wind
or a deafening gale

even the leaves shall rest

whether your heart
is breaking with despair for what is
or is racing with anticipation for what may be

even the leaves shall rest

whether your mind
is filled with swirling contridictions
or is settled into a comfortable cadence

even the leaves shall rest

whether your soul
is entombed by the weightiness of life
or is being loosed by the lifting of your burdens

even the leaves shall rest

when you are hurting
when you are overwhelmed
when it is all too much
when it is all too fast

remember

even the leaves shall rest
