Pop + Culture + Monday: Brian Falduto's Same Old Country Song and God Loves Me Too
"Would a simple tune about two dudes be such a crime."
Our family has been doing a ton of road trips lately, so you know what that means, “Battle for the Bluetooth” time. From podcasts to audio books, to playlists, we have been sharing our latest discoveries and long-held loves. One of the genres that have been pretty popular in our car as of late has been gay country, and topping our every session is Same of Country Love Song by Brian Falduto. As the kids say, it’s a bop.
I DARE your body not to be moving by the end of this song. Not only does it make your toes tap, head nod, and hands clap, its message honors the humanity of LGTBQ folx by normalizing a message through the genre of country. Add this to your playlist, and put this on repeat.

Of course, as we did deep dive into Brian’s music, we stumbled upon God Loves Me Too. Oh my goodness, I wept and wept again as the refrain from one of my tradition’s most beloved hymns (I won’t spoil it for your church nerds) faded in. What I LOVE about this song is that Brian offers a different version, a better version of Christian love and faith than what so often gets the headlines. For so many of us, this is the faith that we know and that we try to express in our own lives and ministries. In this song, he acknowledges hate and violence but focuses on the love and possibilities of God found in his faith and not the hate and exclusion that so many others choose to express.
There’s a church somewhere that doesn’t know
The kind of love that I speak of
Instead of “you are welcome here,”
They’re takin’ lives and makin’ tears
So as I hit my knees today
I close my eyes real tight and pray
That the ones like me might be okay
that hate would get out of love’s way
But the truth of the song hits with these words
But here I am
In the fourth pew in
And the preacher man says “love’s not a sin”
I look around
And see I’ve found
A place where peace and love abound
I’ve waited my whole life for the truth -
God loves me too
Brian clearly is a church person, and I am here for it. May all of our churches be the kind of place that so clearly offers and lives the kind of love that Brian has known.

Pop-Culture Monday is a weekly-ish offering from the world of entertainment from me. I claim no good taste or expertise, only the time to watch and listen and share a little about why should do the same.
Bonus: Brandon Stansell - Hometown
