The + Friday + Five: 09.06.24

Today: Spanish Maps, Lady Killers, Jarrell Carter, Gun Myths, the West Bank

The Friday + Five* is a brief list of things I have found meaningful, challenging, joyful, soothing, or quirky from the week. Some weeks will have themes, while others will feel like they were gathered by a raccoon hyped up on six shots of espresso. You’ve been warned.

Your Friday Five: 09.06.24

Good morning all. I hope your week has been meaningful and has offered more than a few glimpses of joy!

No theme this week, just some random things:

  1. Through the rabbit hole called Susbtack, I ended up reading a story about a Spanish map-making story from the late 18th century, Should this be a map or 500 maps? by who I found via who I found via and her post, Election 2024: The Arab American & Muslim American Votes Will Be Key to Winning. Always glad to be exposed to new-to-me voices and thinkers.
  2. I mentioned earlier a few things I am listening to these days, but I want to share a podcast that we recently binged on a road trip. Now, I have gone through phases with true-crime podcasts, and my spouse is not a fan, but Lady Killers with Lucy Worsley on BBC Podcasts got us both. From the description, “Join Lucy and a team of female detectives as they investigate the ordinary lives—and extraordinary crimes—of women in the past from a contemporary feminist perspective.”
  3. As many of you know, I am a big OrangeTheory Fitness cult member person, so I wander the fitness people on The Gram. Sifting through the mess is not fun, but one person I always watch is Jarell Carter and his dog Dootie. He never fails to entertain.
  4. With yet another school mass shoot, this time at Apalachee High School in GA, here is a good reminder and reference piece from , Debunking the NRA's 9 Favorite Gun Myths.
  5. My friend Omar Haramy from Sabeel is quoted in this Time article, West Bank Palestinians Fear War Will Come for Them Next. The recent actions in the West Bank by Israel are not surprising at all. I have been to Palestine twice this year (paid subscribers can see some of my past Palestine posts) and plan to lead two delegations in the Spring so stay tuned if you are interested in being part of a solidarity delegation.

Comments on The + Friday + Five are always open to everyone, so feel free to drop some random readings and tantalizing tidbits below.

From the Camera Roll: My wife and I went to see Babyface this past week, and while my voice was shredding, my soul was fed. And if you have no idea who Babyface is, I suppose we can still be friends :-)
